About Us

The Bolsa Grande Concert Choir (1960 - 1965) has been providing quality performances since our founding in 1960.

Under the direction of Robert L. Day, Bolsa Grande has seen five Concert Choirs, each finer than its predecessor, propagate the name of Bolsa Grande High School throughout the Pacific Northwest and Southwestern sections of the United States. Under Mr. Day, the group was molded into a choir known for its excellence.

Arizona provided the setting for the choir’s first spring tour in 1960. Concerts were presented at various churches enroute to Arizona. The choir performed at the Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Rincon High School in Tucson, Avondale  High School in Avondale, Tolleson High School and the First Christian Church in Tolleson.

The 1961 spring tour was centered around central and northern California. Concerts were given at a number of churches in Concord, San Jose, Bakersfield, San Mateo and Fresno. Their tour included stops at Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Stanford University, Golden Gate State Park, United Airlines factory, Candlestick Park and the University of California at Berkeley.

One of the most outstanding honors ever received by a choir was bestowed upon the Concert Choir in the spring of 1962. The choir was invited to perform at the opening of the Seattle World’s Fair. After board approval, the group accepted the invitation and made it the highlight of the spring tour. Their Pacific Northwest itinerary included concerts before the State Convention of California Music Educators, Golden State Baptist Theological Seminary, University of Washington and Willamette University.

Two concerts were presented at the opening of the World’s Fair. The Concert Choir was the only representative from California and was one of four high school choirs selected from the nation to perform. In addition to the World’s Fair, the group visited the atomic reactor at the University of Washington and the Shakespearean Theater in Ashland, OR.

Spring vacation found the 1963 Concert Choir on Oahu Island in Hawaii. Their itinerary included concerts at Hickman Air Force Base, the Armed Forces Y.M.C.A. in Honolulu, the Kamehameha School for Girls and the school for boys (private schools for students of pure Hawaiian blood), the Central Union Church in Honolulu and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Honolulu.

In addition to their performances, tours were taken through Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, the Punch Bowl Cemetery, International Market, the battleship Arizona, sugar mills and pineapple plantations and the University of Hawaii.

Over its 5 year history under Mr. Day, the Concert Choir has given over 225 performances and appeared on KGBS, KWIZ, KGGK-FM, KCOP-TV and KNBC-TV. In addition, the choir has been chosen to perform at numerous educational meetings and musical conventions.
